CoEnzyme Q10 Exposed

Print E-mail
Friday, 14 March 2008

CoEnzyme Q10 has been becoming increasingly popular as a supplement, but most people out there don't really know what it is or how it works. If you are one of the many you may well be suprised at the sheer importantance of this seemingly insignificant nutrient. The Natural Health Guy is proud to bring you yet another supplement review, unbiased and in the style that only we know how. Enjoy.

The Facts

Co-Enzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance that is literally found in every cell of your body. Its for this reason that it holds the scientific name 'Ubiquinone' (coming from the word, ubiquitous that means 'found everywhere').

On the outset the way substances like this in our body work can appear hard to understand, but with CoQ10, this is not the case.

The simple fact is, CoEnzyme Q10 is used by our cells to make energy, in fact 95% of all human energy requirements are made possible through the action of CoQ10. Without it, our bodies cells can't make energy, and we would not survive. (5)

So why aren't we hearing about it all the time if it is so important? Fortunately, it is because our bodies naturally produce their own supply of this vital substance. Thats the good news, the bad news is that with age and excersise and other stresses on the body, our supply of CoQ10 can deteriorate and this can lead to a variety of health problems. (7) In fact, the amount your bodies' produce CoQ10 is believed to peak in your twenties and is production is believed to have dropped by 70% by the time you reach forty! (5)

So what happens when there is less CoEnzyme Q10 in the body than is required? Unfortunately the results are not very positve. There is a distinct correlation between people with heart failure having lower levels of CoQ10 in their heart muscle cells. The use of this substance extends beyond natural health and even into regular medical practise, CoEnzyme Q10 is now the most prescribed heart treatment by doctors in Japan.

How Does It Work?

CoEnzyme Q10 maintains heart health not only by supplying it with the necessary nutritents to keep it pumping, but it also acts as a powerful anti-oxidant that protects the body from free radicals. Its due to these anti-oxidant properties that CoQ10 has been labelled a powerful anti-aging supplement.

The positive benefits of CoQ10 aren't just speculation either, the scientific community is increasinly supporting the supplement with hundreds of clinical studies showing that it helps maintain heart health and even reverse symptoms of heart disease such as shortness of breath, difficulty sleeping and swelling. (5) The extraordinary effects of this supplement even go insofar as helping reduce fatigue from stress and excersise and lowering blood pressure. (2)

How To Make Sure Your Body Has Enough CoEnzyme Q10

Fortunately for those who are under the age of twenty-five,your body should be producing enough CoQ10 without any need for supplementation (that is of course, unless you are suffering from chronic illness, a debilitating heart condition, or are undergoing chemotherapy.)

For those that are over the age of twenty-five, especially those past the agge of forty, your body's internal production will have begun decreasing, and you could benefit from taking the nutrient.

So for athletes, highly stressed individuals, those over the age of forty or anyone with chronic health problems or increased risk of cardiovascular diseas, it is wise to make sure your body is getting its required dose of CoEnzyme Q10 from external factors (food and supplementation). It is also important to make sure that your body is in good overall health so it can produce its own internal supply as your primary source of CoQ10 should be made internally.

Often those who undergo supplementation to aide thier health conditions often use it temporarily and tend to stop its use after fully recovering. However, for those who are at risk of cardiovascular or heart diseas, or those over the age of forty, it may be advised to take CoQ10 supplementation regularly.

The best sources of CoEnzyme Q10 are found in organ meats such as the heart of beef, pork or chicken (the the muscle meat does still provide a good quantity). If you are a vegetarian, don't despair as it is also available from vegetable such as brocolli and cabbage, albeit in far smaller quantities.

Choosing The Right Product

With the many different brands of CoQ10 supplements out there, it can be a tough decision to decide which one to get. Here are a few tips...

Pick Japanese....

The majority of commercial CoEnzyme Q10 production is derived from yeast fermentation and to a lesser extent bacterial fermentation. (8) Most of the worlds supply of CoQ10 comes from Japan, producing over five-hundred tonnes per year (which may also explain the nations widespread consumption of the supplement). Japan also oversees the highest manufacturing standards, usually making it the highest quality available.

High Bioavailability...

Most importantly of all, when choosing a coenzyme Q10 product you want it be highly bioavailable, meaning easily absorbed by the body and into the blood.  If it has poor bioavailability than there is little point taking the product, as it is not absorbed into your body and you will not able to achieve any positive health benefits.  Unfortunately many products on the market have poor bioavailability becuase they may be made from large particles that the body cannot absorb, or be may only fat soluble which limits absorbability. So when looking for a Coenzyme Q10 product so important to have one that highly bioavailable, clinically proven to be absorbed into the blood, made from the smallest posible particles and both water and fat soluble in the body.

Product Recommendation

The top product on the market at the moment seems to be Solanova's CoQ10, which meets all of the above criteteria and is specially made to be up to 250% better absorbed that any other CoQ10 products.
