Liver - The Secret of the Neurs?

Print E-mail
Thursday, 13 March 2008

Of the hundreds, if not thousands of traditional African tribes that once lined the Nile River in Sudan the ‘Neurs’ were one of the most fascinating.  Why?

The average height of their men was seven to seven and a half feet, and the women six to six and a half feet.  They were one of the most physically superior and spectacular tribes ever discovered, even taller than the famous Masai tribe. The health of this group was believed to be impeccable, the famous researcher Weston Price discovering they were virtually 100 percent dental cavity free.

What was their secret? Apparently, eating Liver.

In fact, they didn't just eat it, they virtually worshipped it. They believed that each human had a soul which resides in their liver, and that a man’s character and physical growth depended upon how well he fed on the livers of other animals. They held this prized body part so sacred they even had special forks for handling it, and they ate it often, both raw and cooked.

While we can never be sure if this was the cause of their physical superiority, the Neurs were definitely onto something.  Liver contains gram for gram more nutrients than almost all other foods.  It is one of, if not the most nutritionally dense foods we can eat.

Almost every traditional cuisine’s have a liver dish, whether it is French Pate, Spanish Liver and Onions, British Fried Liver and Kidneys, Russian Liver and Sour Cream, and it may be a good idea if we start enjoying these dishes just a little but more.

Liver is:

  • A Superb source of Complete Protein

  • Nature’s Most Concentrated Form of Vitamin A

  • Contains All B vitamins (Especially the Hard to Find Vitamin B12)

  • One of our Best Sources of Folic Acid

  • Contains a Highly Available Form of Iron

  • Contains Trace elements such as Copper, Zinc and Chromium (liver is the best source of copper)

  • One of the Best Sources of Coenzyme Q10

  • A Good Source of Purines, Nitrogen-Containing Compounds that Serve as Precursors for DNA and RNA.

  • A Cure for Pernicious Anaemia

Liver Fights Fatigue?

Eating liver is also known to alleviate fatigue, as was demonstrated in a marvellous experiment by Dr. Benjamin K. Ershoff, in a July 1951 and published in the Proceedings for the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine.

The experiment involved dividing laboratory rats into three groups.

  1. Group 1 eating a basic diet fortified with 11 vitamins.

  2. Group 2 were given the same diet as Group 1 with an additional supply for B vitamins.

  3. Group 3 also given the same original diet but instead of B vitamins supplementation they received liver.

The rats were then tested on their energy and stamina by seeing how long each rat could swim before giving up. Group 1 and 2 lasted little over 13 minutes.  Group 3 who ate liver lasted more than 2 hours before the scientists stopped the experiment.

The Final Word

Either way you look at it, from African Tribes to Scientific Experiments, it looks like liver is something we could all do with more of. Enjoy.
